S. KOREAN FARM, FISH PRODUCTS SAFE FROM RADIATION.

SEOUL, April 5 Asia Pulse - South Korean farm and fishery products are safe from radioactivity despite traces of radionuclides detected in the atmosphere in the past week, the government said Tuesday.

The farm ministry said it collected and checked 58 different samples of agricultural and fisheries products, and all showed no abnormal levels of radiation.

The inspections were carried out to alleviate public concerns that fallout from Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear power station may have affected the products.

"Thirty-nine samples of farm products such as spinach, lettuce and cabbages grown on the east coast and Jeju Island, and 19 types of seafood like squid, saury and crabs caught around the Korean Peninsula were all free of radioactive contamination," the ministry said.

The farm ministry also said that it plans to check milk and meat produced on the east coast starting this week for trace levels of radiation as a precautionary measure.

Authorities, meanwhile, said that inspection of seafood caught in the Pacific Ocean also did not show any abnormal radiation levels so far.

Seoul, which started checking food imports from Japan for contamination last month, has expanded the process to cover locally grown farm products and seafood, and said test results will be posted on various official government Internet sites.
