NSW: Gillman remains in serious condition after fall

SYDNEY, Feb 16 AAP - Apprentice jockey Kaylene Gillman remains in a serious but stablecondition in John Hunter Hospital after suffering severe injuries in a two-horse fallat yesterday's Newcastle race meeting.
Gillman's mount Garfish, trained by her master Noel Mayfield-Smith, and Billy Whizridden by Craig Agnew came to grief rounding the turn in the Stramit Building Maiden.
Agnew suffered a fractured vertebra in his neck but was cleared of a broken ankle.
However, Gillman suffered injuries to her head as well as her shoulder and leg anda hospital spokesman said she was still unconscious in intensive care with her familyby her bedside.
The recent spate of falls continued today with leading Brisbane rider Zac Purton takento Nambour Hospital in a neck brace after coming down at the Sunshine Coast this afternoon.
Sunshine Coast chief steward Graham Ireland said Purton was conscious but would haveprecautionary x-rays this evening.
Purton, who is still an apprentice, is the runaway leader in the Queensland jockeys'premiership with 45 winners this season, 19 ahead of nearest rival Glenn Colless.
Sydney apprentice Robbie Brewer was also involved in a fall at Goulburn and althoughhe rode later in the day, he complained of feeling dizzy after the meeting and soughtmedical attention.
Melbourne's Fabian Alesci escaped serious injury when he fell in the first race ofthe day at Seymour.
It has been a bleak period for jockeys around Australia over the past few months withthe deaths of Jason Oliver and Mark Goring and severe injuries to Melbourne-based LonaganMilham and Perth apprentice Michael Molloy.
Molloy is now well on the road to recovery while Milham was taken off the criticallist last week after suffering head injuries in a fall at Hanging Rock on January 27.
