NSW: Qantas flight forced to return to airport
A Qantas jet carrying 191 passengers, including media magnate Lachlan Murdoch and rockstar Jon Bon Jovi suffered engine failure and was forced to return to Los Angeles airportyesterday.
The Daily Telegraph newspaper says 747-100 jumbo bound for New York was about a quarterof the way into its ascent when the captain was forced to shut down an engine.
The paper says News Limited chairman LACHLAN MURDOCH, his wife SARAH O'HARE, formerAnsett chairman and News Corp board member KEN COWLEY and rocker JON BON JOVI were onboard.
Captain PAUL HOLLAND was flying his last flight to New York before retiring next weekafter 35 years with Qantas.
He says the cause of the engine failure was unknown and is under investigation.
Some passengers reported a loud cracking noise and seeing a sheet of flames comingfrom the plane's engine.
The planes flight from Sydney to Los Angeles had passed without incident.
